Arte-On Stage Car

Arte – Celebrity Beyond

Sometimes a project lands on your desk that sounds straightforward enough... until somebody says, "Can we make it smaller, lighter, remotely controlled, smoke, spin and still look like a real car?"

For Arte aboard Celebrity Beyond, we were tasked with transforming an existing Mini Convertible into a fully functioning piece of stage scenery. The challenge was to retain all the character and recognisable features of the original vehicle whilst adapting it for use within a cruise ship theatre environment, where weight, manoeuvrability and reliability are critical.

The result was a highly customised scenic vehicle that became a key feature of the production.

What We Built

  • Lightweighted Mini Convertible scenic vehicle

  • Cut-and-shut body modification

  • Reduced overall vehicle dimensions

  • Bespoke fabricated wheel spinners

  • Integrated smoke effects system

  • Wireless DMX lighting control

  • Retained operational vehicle lighting

  • Air caster movement system

  • Custom fabrication and engineering

  • Cruise ship installation and commissioning

The starting point was a standard Mini Convertible. From there, the vehicle underwent extensive modification in our Hampshire workshop. The bodywork was carefully cut, resized and re-engineered to create a more compact scenic version suitable for the stage whilst retaining the proportions and personality of the original design.

Weight reduction played a huge part in the project. Through a combination of structural modifications, bespoke fabrication and careful material selection, we significantly reduced the overall weight of the vehicle whilst maintaining strength and durability for repeated performances.

To add a little theatrical flair, we designed and manufactured a set of bespoke wheel spinners, helping the vehicle stand out under stage lighting. Integrated smoke effects were incorporated into the build, allowing the car to produce atmospheric effects during key moments of the show.

One of the more interesting technical challenges was retaining the vehicle's lighting systems whilst removing the constraints of traditional cabling. Using wireless DMX control, we were able to keep the headlights and lighting effects fully operational, giving the production team complete flexibility whilst maintaining a clean and reliable installation.

The vehicle was also fitted with an air caster system, allowing it to glide smoothly across the stage with minimal effort. This gave performers and stage crew precise control over movement whilst avoiding the practical limitations of a conventional wheeled vehicle in a theatre environment.

Projects like this are where Clockwork Scenery's combination of scenic fabrication, engineering and technical integration really comes into its own. The build drew upon a wide range of in-house skills including aluminium fabrication, structural engineering, scenic construction, special effects integration, set electrics, wireless DMX systems and bespoke prop manufacture.

The finished vehicle looked every bit the part on stage, whilst hiding a huge amount of engineering beneath the surface. It's exactly the sort of unusual challenge we enjoy — taking something familiar and reimagining it as a practical, reliable and visually exciting piece of live entertainment scenery.
