Located in Bordon (between Farnham and Haslemere) on the Surrey and Hampshire border, we’re lucky to be just under an hours train journey from Waterloo, and close to the A3.

Most of our work is in the workshop which at 12,000 square feet and with good height (9m to apex) allows for pre assembly of the builds.

Set in an Ex Royal Engineers Barracks we have an old tank workshop! With the carefully laid out workshop we have four distinct zones, Metalwork, Carpentry, Assembly, and Paint which flow from one to the other allowing greater efficiency and a great space to work.

Workshop Labourer / Trainee Scenery Builder

Interested in carpentry, theatre, live events or simply making really big things?

Clockwork Scenery is looking for an enthusiastic Workshop Labourer to join our scenery-building team.

This is a great opportunity for a school leaver, college leaver or recent graduate who wants to begin a practical career in theatre and live events. You don’t need years of experience—we’re looking for someone reliable, curious and keen to learn.

One week you might be helping build a stage set. The next, you could be preparing scenery destined for a theatre, cruise ship or live event somewhere around the world.

Wat you’ll be doing

• Assisting our carpenters, metalworkers and scenery builders

• Learning practical carpentry and workshop skills

• Cutting, sanding, assembling and finishing scenic pieces

• Preparing materials, tools and work areas for the team

• Keeping the workshop clean, tidy and safe

• Helping to organise materials, stock and equipment

• Pitching in with general workshop tasks wherever an extra pair of hands is needed

• Loading and unloading scenery, equipment and deliveries

• Helping with packing and preparation for installations

• Getting involved with a huge variety of unusual builds

• Occasionally assisting on installations and live-event projects

Keeping a busy workshop running smoothly is a team effort. Some days you’ll be helping create impressive scenery; other days, you’ll be clearing work areas, sorting materials or discovering just how much sawdust one building can produce.

Who we’re looking for

You might have studied carpentry, construction, theatre production, technical theatre, design or a related subject—but enthusiasm and attitude matter more than qualifications.

You’ll need to be:

• Genuinely interested in carpentry, scenery or live events

• Practical and comfortable working with your hands

• Reliable, punctual and willing to get stuck in

• Able to follow instructions and work safely

• Happy working as part of a busy workshop team

• Willing to learn new tools, materials and techniques

• Comfortable with physical work and lifting

• Prepared to help with every part of workshop life

• Ready for the occasional early start or unusual project

A driving licence would be useful, but it isn’t essential.

No scenery-building experience? No problem. A good attitude, practical mindset and willingness to learn will take you a long way.

2. Our Business

Clockwork Scenery is a UK-based company specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of scenery and technical set pieces for theatre, cruise ships, live events and themed environments. We operate primarily from our workshop in Hampshire and provide services across the UK and internationally.

3. Our Supply Chains

Our supply chain includes the sourcing of raw materials (timber, metal, fabric, paint, etc.), equipment, and subcontracted labour or services. We work with a range of suppliers and partners in the UK and occasionally overseas, depending on project requirements.

4. Policies and Commitments

We are committed to ensuring ethical practices throughout our business and expect the same high standards from our suppliers and subcontractors. Our policies reflect our commitment to act ethically and with integrity in all business relationships. These include:

We require our suppliers to confirm that they comply with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and that they take reasonable steps to prevent slavery and human trafficking in their operations.

5. Due Diligence and Risk Assessment

We continue to assess the risk of modern slavery within our supply chains, particularly where there is reliance on manual or low-skilled labour or where materials are sourced from high-risk regions.

Our due diligence process includes:

• Reviewing supplier practices and ethical standards

• Requiring compliance declarations from suppliers

• Regular reviews of high-risk suppliers or categories

• Including anti-slavery clauses in relevant contracts

6. Training and Awareness

We ensure that relevant staff, particularly those in procurement and project management, are aware of the risks of modern slavery and understand how to identify warning signs and take appropriate action.

7. Performance Monitoring

We regularly review and update our processes to improve transparency and accountability. We aim to strengthen supplier relationships by working collaboratively to raise standards and reduce risks.

8. Next Steps

Over the coming year, we aim to:

• Improve our supplier vetting procedures

• Expand training on modern slavery awareness

• Enhance monitoring of overseas supply chains where relevant
