On Broadway & Boogie Wonderland

Celebrity Silhouette

One of the most enjoyable challenges in cruise ship entertainment is creating scenery that can work hard across multiple productions whilst still looking completely different from one show to the next.

For On Broadway aboard Celebrity Silhouette, we worked alongside the production team to develop a versatile scenic system that shared its core structure with Boogie Wonderland. The challenge was to create a substantial scenic environment for two very different productions whilst ensuring everything could be efficiently stored within the ship's scenic garage between performances.

The result was a flexible, modular system that could quickly transform from one show to another, helping maximise both stage impact and operational efficiency whilst delivering two very different visual worlds.

What We Built

  • Shared modular scenic structure for On Broadway and Boogie Wonderland

  • Curved illuminated tread units

  • RGBW LED lightbox treads

  • Brushed aluminium handrails

  • Brushed aluminium trim details

  • Interchangeable scenic fascias

  • Side portal flats

  • Integrated pixel LED systems

  • Glitter scenic finishes for Boogie Wonderland

  • Vac-formed Brick & rose detail panels

  • Polycarbonate illuminated lamps

  • Central scenic doorway truck

  • W-DMX wireless lighting control

  • Air caster movement system

  • Aluminium flown scenic elements

  • Stage-width illuminated archway

  • Integrated LED lighting systems

At the heart of the design sat a large modular scenic structure designed specifically to fit within the operational constraints of the theatre. Built to store efficiently within the scenic garage, the system provided a common framework that could be re-skinned and adapted between productions.

The centrepiece of the structure was a series of curved tread units incorporating RGBW LED lightboxes. Finished with brushed aluminium handrails and trim, the treads provided both architectural presence and dynamic lighting possibilities, allowing the stage environment to transform throughout the performance. Whilst elegant and simple in appearance, the units required a combination of scenic carpentry, aluminium fabrication, LED integration and specialist finishing techniques to achieve the final result.

One of the key design features was the use of interchangeable scenic fascias. Different fascia treatments could be quickly hooked onto the main structure, allowing the same scenic framework to support entirely different visual identities between shows. It's the sort of practical scenic engineering that audiences never see, but which makes a huge difference behind the scenes.

The side portal flats combined scenic fabrication with integrated entertainment technology. Pixel LED tape was incorporated directly into the structures, creating lighting effects that became part of the scenery itself rather than simply illuminating it. For Boogie Wonderland, glitter fabric finishes added a touch of disco glamour, whilst On Broadway utilised elegant vac-formed rose detailing complemented by illuminated polycarbonate lamps to create a more theatrical aesthetic.

Another key feature of the production was a central doorway truck that became a focal point throughout the show. Designed to move smoothly across the stage, the unit was fitted with an air caster system, allowing it to glide effortlessly into position whilst remaining easy for the crew to handle during performances.

To maintain complete freedom of movement, the doorway incorporated W-DMX wireless lighting control, eliminating the need for trailing cables whilst allowing integrated lighting effects to be controlled remotely. Combining scenic fabrication, set electrics, wireless show control and practical engineering, the truck perfectly demonstrated how modern entertainment technology can be seamlessly integrated into scenic construction.

Above the stage, we fabricated a series of flown aluminium scenic elements, including a full stage-width illuminated archway. Manufactured using lightweight aluminium fabrication and precision TIG welding techniques, these elements delivered maximum visual impact whilst remaining practical for operation within a cruise ship theatre environment. Integrated LED lighting helped tie the various scenic components together, creating a cohesive visual language across the production.

Manufactured in our Hampshire workshop, and shipped to Amsterdam to be installed in cruise, the project brought together scenic carpentry, aluminium fabrication, LED integration, pixel lighting systems, W-DMX control, air caster technology, vac-form scenic detailing and specialist scenic finishing. It is a great example of the multidisciplinary approach we bring to cruise ship entertainment projects, combining scenic construction, technical infrastructure and practical engineering to create scenery that not only looks impressive but works efficiently show after show.

The finished result gave Celebrity Silhouette two visually distinct productions built around a common scenic framework — proving that with a bit of clever engineering and creative fabrication, one structure really can become two completely different worlds.
